Approach
Together with Möbius, Poppies Bakeries embarked on a clear strategy. The first step was defining the scope and outlining core and non-core activities within the organization. A systematic approach was then employed to collect the right data, using standard data collection templates and clear procedures to ensure the quality and completeness of the information.
To accurately calculate emissions, the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol was applied. This ensured that emissions were consistently allocated to the various sites and distributed across the value chain. A comprehensive list of emission factors was created for services, ingredients, and packaging, covering scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 emissions—where the greatest impact was found. This ensures a consistent calculation of the corporate carbon footprint and the distinction between FLAG and industrial emissions over the years.
A data-driven CO₂ dashboard: the basis for sustainability
This approach resulted in a detailed CO₂ dashboard that provides insight into emissions within scope 1, 2, and relevant scope 3 categories. This dashboard not only offers a clear overview of the main emission sources within Poppies Bakeries’ value chain but also aids in monitoring and evaluating FLAG emissions (Forest, Land, and Agriculture emissions).
Additionally, based on the carbon footprint, the necessary tables were created to meet the reporting requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), specifically section E1. Ultimately, this dashboard also assessed the feasibility of Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) goals.
Results
With a detailed 2023 CO₂ footprint as a starting point, Poppies is now ready to formulate targeted reduction strategies. The analyses show that 96% of emissions come from scope 3, mainly from purchased goods and services. This shows the importance of collaborating with suppliers and focusing on more sustainable raw materials and packaging. Additionally, there are opportunities to switch to green electricity at locations where grey power is still used.
With a clear methodology, a robust CO₂ dashboard, and concrete next steps, Poppies Bakeries has laid a solid foundation. In the coming years, the company will continue to work on reducing its ecological footprint and achieving its sustainability ambitions, setting an example for the industry.
