Strategic challenge

Sustainability has been deeply imbedded in NMC's culture for many years, but as ESG moves up the corporate agenda, NMC has decided to formulate new ambitions in its business strategy to remain competitive, future-proof and ahead of customer and legislative demands. At the same time, NMC wanted to build the capabilities needed to execute this strategy, whether in terms of governance, action planning or reporting.

Approach

Möbius guided and supported NMC's senior leadership and sustainability manager through the  journey from strategic planning to successful execution.

Sustainability strategy development

A tangible sustainability strategy should focus on a few topics that are highly relevant (material) to the company and its stakeholders – and that it can integrate into its way of doing business. Möbius supported NMC Group in driving a rigorous, both analytical and stakeholder-based, materiality process. This led to the identification of NMC's material ESG topics and solid (senior) leadership buy-in on why to act on these topics.

Exploration of relevant sustainability objectives

Translating material topics into measurable, outcome-based targets is key tot the implementation of any sustainability strategy implementation (and the CSRD). Möbius acted as a strategic soundboard for NMC to formulate corporate targets in relation to climate change, circular economy and people.

Setting up workstreams for action planning

A sustainability strategy and targets are only as effective as the actions that drive their implementation. An effective sustainability governance structure will help to ensure progress in the future.

External reporting towards the CSRD

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive gives companies an extended framework for how and where to report. Möbius supported NMC Group in their first steps towards a CSRD compliant sustainability reporting architecture.

Results

NMC Group successfully identified the material topics for its sustainability strategy and gained buy-in from senior management. The company also formulated measurable targets for climate change, circular economy and people. With Möbius' guidance, NMC Group also established a sustainability reporting architecture that meets the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a sustainability manager do?
A sustainability manager is responsible for implementing a company's sustainability strategy by developing initiatives, establishing a governance structure, ensuring compliance with reporting frameworks, and setting measurable targets. They play a crucial role in driving sustainability within the organisation and creating a more sustainable future.
Is sustainability reporting the same as ESG?
Sustainability reporting discloses non-financial performance information, including environmental, social, economic, and governance issues. ESG, on the other hand, sets standards for a company's behavior used by socially conscious investors to screen investments and measures environmental, social, and governance factors for analysing sustainability efforts. Sustainability reporting includes ESG goals and progress towards achieving them.
